Real-Time Monitoring for Seaweed Hatcheries and Offshore Farms

SEA-SENSE is an EU-funded project developing an integrated IoT monitoring system for the European seaweed aquaculture sector — from environmental sensing and data connectivity to cloud processing and digital twin integration.

Why seaweed monitoring matters

Europe's seaweed aquaculture sector is growing, but operators lack affordable, integrated tools for real-time environmental monitoring. Water temperature, light, pH, and nutrient levels are critical to cultivation success, yet they are often measured manually or inconsistently. Without continuous monitoring, operators face crop loss, inefficient resource use, and gaps in traceability. Existing solutions tend to be fragmented — no single system covers the full path from hatchery to harvest with standardised, interoperable data.

What SEA-SENSE does

SEA-SENSE develops an end-to-end monitoring kit for seaweed cultivation, covering both indoor hatcheries and offshore farm environments. Sensors at the edge collect environmental data, which flows through a connectivity gateway to cloud services built on the NGSI-LD standard. From the cloud, data is made available to digital twin platforms for visualisation and decision support.

Key Benefits

Continuous Monitoring

Real-time environmental data from hatchery and offshore sensors, replacing manual sampling with automated, around-the-clock visibility. Operators can track conditions as they change, not hours after the fact.

Open Standards

Built on NGSI-LD and compatible with the FIWARE ecosystem, ensuring data interoperability across platforms and organisations. No proprietary formats, no vendor lock-in.

Actionable Alerts

Automated alarm systems detect environmental anomalies early, notifying operators before conditions affect crop health. Configurable thresholds adapt to different sites and cultivation stages.

Full Traceability

Track environmental conditions across the entire cultivation cycle, from hatchery seed production to harvested biomass. Continuous data records support quality certification, regulatory compliance, and buyer assurance.
